MIPS Helmets: Helmets with yellow “MIPS” stickers are popping up for most activities and sports. I’m no neuroscientist, but I hope to help you understand this concept. Helmets that contain a Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), will have two, smooth-surfaced components on the interior of the helmet to reduce friction upon impact. The goal is to prevent impact forces from exerting a rotational force on your brain. The two smooth surfaced interior components of the helmet allow the outer shell to be struck and slide around your head. Contrast that with simply having the impact force transferred to your skull without the outer shell being able to slide smoothly to imagine how the rotational force on your brain is created. If you partake in any sport or activity that a helmet is suggested for, please perform diligent research into MIPS.

Should I get the blue one or the orange one? I’m definitely leaning towards the orange.

This photo was taken on top of Indian Staircase in Red River Gorge, KY several years ago. Nearly everything I had with me was off-brand and heavy. You have to start somewhere 😊 Don't stress over finding the perfect gear for an outing. Your inventory will expand over the years and your pack-out will vary depending on the trip or activity. You will learn something about your gear and personal preferences each time you go out.

Practice your knots frequently. Practice your knots on different ropes. Practice your knots with one hand. Practice your knots with the other hand. The idea here, is for thou to practice thy knots 🤗🪢🤪

In some scenarios, it is more comfortable to extend your belay so you can stand comfortably🤙. In this instance, I used two doubles to get me to a comfy stance, took my shoes off, and belayed from above🤠

Snacks are important while climbing, but so is leaving no trace🌳🌎 I keep a carabiner on the side of my pack specifically for holding a trash/recycling bag ♻️ This keeps the bag readily accessible while securing it from blowing away 🙂

Can you see the two different ropes tied to me? The blue rope is dynamic and designed to fall on without exerting a shock load on your internal organs and skeleton🩻. The black rope is static, meaning it doesn’t stretch like a dynamic rope. I used the black one for an Aussie rappel 🤘🏻

Over crimping burns forearm strength that should be saved for the crux. Practice using just enough grip strength to balance your upper body on the wall to prevent pumping out prematurely.

Lace-up climbing shoes allow you to achieve a custom fit for the route 🧗 Overall, La Sportiva TC Pros are by far my favorite shoe. However, if you’re new to the sport, I would suggest an entry level Velcro shoe 🤙

The one time it’s ok to procrastinate is early mornings before packing your gear up. Give your tent and sleeping bag time to air 💨 out and catch some sun ☀️ before stowing them away.
